The Gennargentu region lies between the mountains and the coasts of Barbagia and Ogliastra. Gennargentu is the widest mountain range in Sardinia: the central massif, with the highest peaks, stretches over the near Supramonti as far as the sea, where it forms the Golfo di Orosei, one of the wildest coasts in the Mediterranean Sea. The landscape is really interesting and varied: ranges and valleys alternate rocks and canyons; pasture lands, forests reach the beaches, surrounded by cliffs which drop to the crystal-clear sea. The entire territory is a natural oasis thanks to the luxuriant flora and the very rich fauna. Also fascinating can be the observation of rare species: the last muflons, the Falco della Regina (hawk) and monk seals. But Gennargentu is much more: the presence of man, constantly working to adapt to the environment, and the exploitation of local resources for the life of an ancient community, are all factors that have contributed to create an important culture, which finds its highest expression in its close tie to the earth. This treasure, added to the natural treasure, is preserved and enhanced in these places. The very ancient tradition, which still exists, can be seen and felt in the precious handicraft products as well as in the holy architectures, the language, the literature and the rich and genuine food. |
